Purpose when training - a brief thought!


When writing a training plan, there should be a reason for everything in there.

If there is no good reason why you are doing a movement as it relates to the goals of that micro/meso/macro cycle then it should not be there.

How to identify if something is useful:

What is my main goal?
What is the aim of this session in relation to that goal?
What is the aim of this particular movement in regards to that goal?
Does this movement achieve this better than anything else I am doing, or could be doing?

If yes - Great.
If no - Why are you doing it?

Example:

Exercise bike and a Powerlifter in a GPP phase.

What is my main goal? 
Become a better powerlifter.

What is the aim of this session in relation to that goal?
I'm in a GPP block, so this session is designed to improve my work capacity.

'General physical preparedness' - Essentially getting the body ready for the training that is about to happen.

Typically moderate intensities, moderate volume, lower skilled movements and larger variety of movements and time domains than is normal for that athlete.

What is the aim of this particular movement in regards to that goal?
To serve as a mono-structural movement that has minimal stress on my joints, to improve my aerobic capacity.

Does this movement achieve this better than anything else I am doing, or could be doing?
Yes, I only have access to a bike.

Conversely, same situation in a different training block:

What is my main goal? 
Become a better powerlifter.

What is the aim of this session in relation to that goal?
I'm in a pre-competition block, so this session is designed to improve my skills in maxing out the powerlifts.

What is the aim of this particular movement in regards to the goal?
Erm... I dunno... fun?

Does this movement achieve this better than anything else I am doing, or could be doing?
No. Don't do it.
